
As a designated California Healthy City, the Agoura Hills Healthy City Program logo illustrates the mission to create comfort in the future by providing opportunities for physical activity and recreation programs, promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, protecting the environment, securing the community and its infrastructure, and offering easy access to educational and supportive resources.
RECREATION/FITNESS CLASSES
The Department of Community Services offers monthly fitness classes for people of all ages. Community members can take individual classes or sign up for a group of classes at a less expensive rate. Classes include: Gentle Yoga, Zumba, Dynamic Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Jazzercise, Body Dynamics, and PACE Exercise, to name a few. The Department also offers Adult Basketball and Softball Leagues year round to the community. A new, collaborative effort to offer a “corporate games” program is about to be implemented, as well.
WALK TO SCHOOL/RIDE YOUR BIKE TO SCHOOL WITH THE MAYOR
Two to three times a year, the City of Agoura Hills works in cooperation with a local elementary school to have a “Walk to School” or “Ride Your Bike” to school day. As an incentive, the Mayor of Agoura Hills joins the children and their families to help promote physical fitness and family time! These have been very successful in Agoura Hills and local schools are even hosting them more than just when the City participates!
COMMUNITY EXPO/PUBLIC SAFETY DAY
Annually, the City of Agoura Hills hosts a “Public Safety Day and Community Expo” that features many health and fitness related activities. Healthy food, fitness demonstrations and expo are all part of this educational day.
COMPETIVE RACE
The City of Agoura Hills annually co-hosts two major competitive running events. The Great Race of Agoura Hills is held each year at the end of March with over 7,000 runners from over 250 cities from around the world. The come here to compete in two half marathons, a 10 K, a 5K, a one mile and a family fun run event. It is a premiere health and wellness activity that the entire community embraces. Another race that the City co-hosts is the RAD 10K which happens during the annual Reyes Adobe Days event in October. This is 10K that runs a course through the city streets and local Santa Monica Mountains. Occasionally, the Department of Community Services will offer a smaller run, hike or bike ride as part of a larger community, cultural event. It’s critical to keep the fitness, health and wellness aspect in all of the programs that are offered.
NUTRITION AND HEALTH
The “Tri-Cities Senior Expo” is the City of Agoura Hills’ single, largest health related event that takes place in this area. With over 50 vendors, live demonstrations, medical testing, wellness lectures, healthy food and fitness entertainment, thousands of local seniors benefit from this event. During the year, the Department also hosts many health and wellness lectures at the Agoura Hills Senior Center. During flu season, the City also participates in a collaborative effort to dispense Flu Shots to the community.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
The City continues to keep with its “Go Green” campaign. Internally, the City has moved to mostly recyclable products, including paper, silverware/dishes, and is making a big push this next fiscal year to have more applications and forms downloadable on the website. Externally, the City now has recycling trash cans in all of its parks, which are also used at all of the City’s special events.
SAFETY AND TRANSPORTATION
The Dial-A-Ride program continues to operate within Agoura Hills. The City recently collaborated with the County of Ventura to provide service to a neighboring area. Community members utilizing public transportation within the City of Agoura Hills and surrounding communities has almost doubled!
AGOURA HILLS’ LOCAL PARKS/FACILITIES
With all of the community recreation programs that the Department of Community Services offers for the residents in Agoura Hills, the over sixty acres of beautiful parks are where people spend much of their time. Every park is equipped with a walking path and large, open areas for people to work out, mediate or just take a stroll. The City also operates nine tennis courts at the local high school, an equestrian arena and three softball fields. These community members are physically embedded in a lifestyle that is rich in health and wellness here in Agoura Hills.
